Frequently Asked Questions

Picture
Where do you teach?
I teach from my home studio in Benders Landing, near Rayford Rd and highway 99 in Spring, TX. Please contact me directly for the address. I also offer virtual lessons via Zoom!
During the school year, I offer lessons through the choir programs at TWHS, ORHS, and GOHS. Please specify during registration if you are interested in taking lessons during your choir class.

What style(s) of music do you teach?
My personal training is in classical voice, and most of my professional career has been in opera. That being said, I am a lover of all styles, and have trained and performed musical theater, pop, jazz, choral music, etc. I believe that good classical training is universal to all styles of music. At our first lesson together, we will assess your personal goals and set a plan for how best to accomplish them.

At what age can my child start voice lessons?
This answer depends on the maturity and musical skills of your child. In general, I recommend that any student under the age of 9 will take a minimum of one year of 30 minute piano lessons with me before beginning voice lessons. At age 9 and up, I recommend an hour lesson, divided into 30 minutes of piano and 30 minutes of voice. At age 13 and up, students may begin full hour-long voice lessons.

I do this for several reasons. First, students under the age of 13 generally do not yet have the stamina or technique to sing for a full hour. Second, I want all of my students to have a good basis in musical literacy before starting voice. I use a very interactive method for piano lessons, and encourage my students to sing as they play!

Do I need a piano in order to take piano lessons?
Yes. Beginner piano students are required to practice at home for a minimum of 10-15 minutes per day, and will need access to a piano.

What kind of piano or keyboard should I buy?
If buying a keyboard, it must have:
  • 88 keys (full-sized)
  • weighted keys (so that students can play loud and soft)
  • a damper pedal plug-in
If buying a piano:
  • consider looking on fb marketplace or other local selling sites before buying retail!
  • remember that the piano must be tuned at least once a year (about $100/year).
